Chestnut Hill College to Host 2009 PHENND Conference

PHILADELPHIA, PA –
Chestnut Hill College will host the 2009
Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development Conference
(PHENND) on February 27, 2009 at the College.
PHENND is a consortium
of 36 colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia area that works to
strengthen Philadelphia's service and service learning communities. PHENND works
with its member institutions to find beneficial community-based,
service-learning partnerships and actively seeks to revitalize local communities
and schools as well as foster civic responsibility among the region's colleges
and universities.
The theme of the conference will be “Financial Asset Development” and will cover
topics such as volunteer income tax assistance, public benefits campaigns, and
financial education. The conference will focus on how regional colleges and
universities can play a role in helping low-income communities become
self-sufficient financially. Conference workshops will include:
- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in the Delaware
Valley
- Financial Education Opportunities at VITA
(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Sites
- Philadelphia Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign
- Financial Education Clubs for College Campuses
- Foreclosures in Philadelphia
- The Benefit Bank & National Student
Partnerships model
- Workforce Development Initiatives at the
University of Pennsylvania
The keynote speaker for
the conference will be Karen Gross, president of Southern Vermont College. Karen
Gross has a long and distinguished career as a community development leader and
academic. For more than two decades she was a professor of law at New York Law
School where she specialized in consumer finance consumer debt, and was
previously the President and CEO of The Coalition for Consumer Bankruptcy Debtor
Education.
The conference is open to the
