Ten Thousand Villages to Donate Portion of Sales to Chestnut Hill College Student Service Trip to Tanzania

Release Date: Friday, February 12, 2010

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Ten Thousand Villages, a fair trade retailer of handmade crafts, will donate 15 percent of their sales on Friday, February 12, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. to support Chestnut Hill College’s student service trip to the Bigwa Sisters Secondary School in Tanzania. Ten Thousand Villages is located at 8331 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia.

The money raised will be used to offset expenses for four students in the College’s Global Studies class who will travel to Morogoro, a city in the East African Republic of Tanzania from May 16 through June 2, 2010. Marie Conn, Ph.D., professor of religion, will travel with students and faculty from Marywood University and Rosemont College, sister schools in the African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC). ASEC works to educate the women religious living in Africa and to prepare them for leadership roles. While in Tanzania, Chestnut Hill College students will tutor the sisters in English proficiency, and also help them prepare for their final examinations. This is the second service trip to Tanzania for students from Chestnut Hill; they previously visited the Bigwa School in May, 2009.

Students planning on attending the service trip have hosted weekly bake sales on campus and will sell fair trade Valentine’s Day chocolate to help offset the cost of the trip. Because of the growing need at the Bigwa School, students are also collecting pens, pencils, and paper to take with them in May.

“The entire Chestnut Hill College community is grateful to Rena Shaffer, manager of Ten Thousand Villages of Chestnut Hill, for helping us raise funds for our service trip to Tanzania in May,” says Marie Conn, Ph.D., professor of religion who will be accompanying students on the Tanzania trip.
