Adjunct Professor Rudolf Alexandrov

Release Date: Friday, August 5, 2011

The College continues to mourn the loss of Rudolf Alexandrov, an adjunct professor of mathematics, who died by suicide inside the Rotunda on Wednesday, August 3rd, at approximately 5:30 p.m. The College has largely refrained from offering details of the incident because it was under investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department, which is normal under these circumstances.

Regrettably, however, misinformation has circulated about this unfortunate event that should be corrected. Contrary to published reports that Mr. Alexandrov ended his life “in front of [his] class” and his wife, who also teaches at the College, the facts make it clear that the incident did not take place in the classroom but in a public area of the building and was witnessed by only a handful of staff and perhaps one or two students.

Under any circumstances, the events of August 3rd have left our campus community shocked and filled with sadness for Mr. Alexandrov and his family. We ask that you join us in continuing to keep the Alexandrov family in your prayers at this time of great sorrow.

Professional counselors will be available to speak with any member of the College community who wishes to do so.

Cards, notes of condolences and/or donations for the family may be dropped off at the CHC Student Accounts Office, Attention: Maureen LaNoce. The Student Accounts Office is open until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. A drop box is also available at the same location.
