On August 2, 2006, President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., announced one of the most transformational moments in the College's history, the acquisition of the SugarLoaf estate from the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation for the purchase price of $11 million.
SugarLoaf Hill, a 30-acre property situated diagonally across Germantown Avenue from the College's existing campus, offered the College a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to nearly double the size of its campus and allow for expansion to accommodate a growing student body. The existing structures at SugarLoaf have all been renovated and are currently being used as classroom space, lodging for undergraduate students and for conferences and social events. In the long-term, the property will be expanded to include additional residential and academic buildings in accordance with the College’s Master Plan.
A $2.7 million renovation of the Lodge commenced with the installation of a new roof and new windows and the structural refurbishment of the bridge connecting the Lodge with the Greenfield Mansion. Interior renovations followed with the installation of HVAC and sprinkler systems, cables for wireless technology and TV, plastering, painting, and new carpeting and furniture. The Lodge opened in August 2008 as a 32-room residence hall.
The $6 million renovation and restoration of the Greenfield Mansion is complete. The scope of work included a complete refurbishment of all electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. The dining room was expanded and features seating for 166. Extensive improvements were made to the kitchen as well as the installation of new kitchen equipment. The three floors of the mansion were reconfigured to provide space for classes, conferences and meeting facilities. The restoration of the original façade and landscaping complete this project. The Mansion will serve as a conference and event facility when students are not on campus.
There is no new construction planned for the near term.
We have removed dead, diseased, and dangerous trees and have cleaned up the forested buffer along Germantown Avenue. Future landscaping plans have been incorporated into the College's Master Plan.
The College received a $1 million Growing Greener Grant to support the conservation of a portion of the SugarLoaf property as green space in perpetuity.
The College was also awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to support the development of SugarLoaf and in particular, the renovation of the Mansion as classroom, conference, and event space for use by students, the College, and the surrounding community.
The acquisition of SugarLoaf Hill has unexpectedly created a re-energized donor pool. SugarLoaf's fund-raising initiative, through the telemarketing firm IDC, has to date contacted more than 1,000 non-donor alums and new parent constituencies and has secured pledges from 30 percent of those solicited for the property's development - a huge response for us!
