College Sponsors Book Drive for Fitler Academics Plus Elementary College Community Helps Another Local Elementary School To Create New Library

Chestnut Hill College is actively seeking donations of new and gently used books (Kindergarten through 8th Grade) to help create a library for Fitler Academics Plus Elementary School in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.
Fitler Elementary has a beautiful library room and a budget for a library aide, but lacks a budget to purchase books. Books for Fitler Elementary School are also being provided by a book drive sponsored by the International Quidditch Association (I.Q.A.)
Under Dr. Kahn’s hard work and leadership, the College community last year revitalized a library at Eleanor Emlen Elementary School located in the West Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. Emlen Elementary lacked a functioning library for six years and after many months of hard work and dedication by members of the College community, the library at Emlen opened the week of September 20, with 6,700 books in circulation and another 2,000 books in reserve. Dr. Kahn received donations from Garretford Elementary in Drexel Hill, Friends Central in Wynnewood and the Maple Avenue School in Goffstown, New Hampshire to create the Emlen School library. She is continuing that practice of collecting and redistributing books for Fitler Academics Plus.
“The College is collecting books again because we know that there are books in the community that children have outgrown, books that are still in good condition and that could be read by other children,” says Dr. Kahn. “We also know that children who choose books to read on their own learn to love reading and succeed in school. Collecting new and gently used books is labor-intensive, surely, but the result is a library stocked with books that children are eager to read.”
Book donations can be dropped off in the basement of St. Joseph Hall on the College’s campus located at 9601 Germantown Avenue. There is an additional book drop at O’Doodles Toy Store located at 8335 Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill.
