Friday, April 8, 2011

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Chestnut Hill College Music Department presents the musical, “Once Upon a Mattress” on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. in the College Auditorium located at 9601 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia.

This charming adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea” comes to life on the stage at Chestnut Hill, where the music department produces many quality productions for the local community.

In “Once Upon a Mattress” we are swept away to the fictional medieval kingdom ruled by Queen Aggravain and the mute King Sextimus the Silent. The kingdom is unhappy because they are plagued by the unfair rule, “Throughout the land no one may wed, 'till Dauntless shares his wedding bed,” because each princess is not deemed suitable for Prince Dauntless the Drab. The castle is soon turned upside down by the arrival of Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, who wins the prince’s heart and shows that you can’t judge a book by its cover. This delightful musical tale with music by Mary Rodgers received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical as well as a Best Leading Actress nomination for Carol Burnett.

Tickets are for $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children, and $ 3 for students. For more information, please call 215.753.3707.
